A visit to Oldest McDonald's Restaurant in the world!

(Unpaid advertising by attribution)

It's in California on 10207 Lakewood Blvd in Downey!

This place has been on our list ever since we saw the movie "The Founder," which tells the story of the McDonald's chain. It was clear that at some point in the oldest McDonald's restaurant we would eat our burger. Since August 1953 until today you get there burgers, fries, coke etc.

This year it finally worked and we made our way from Los Angeles to Downey to visit the oldest still active McDonald's restaurant. We had caught the wrong time and of course were stuck in traffic almost always. However, this time we had a great sunset over Los Angeles.

There are over 36,000 McDonald's restaurants around the world, but none is comparable to this one in California. The visit to Downey's restaurant is like a step back in time.

Here you have to order at the counter, the staff wear fifties fashion and music from these past years is streaming out of the speakers. One is greeted by the cooking mascot Speedee, not by Roland McDonald, who came later as well as the Drive Thru.

There is also a souvenir shop with moderate prices, where you can buy for example a Speedee T-shirt.

It's amazing how prices have changed since then. Signs show the price changes of, for example, burgers, gas, bread and drinks. For example, when McDonald's opened in Downey, a hamburger cost 15 cents a euro today!

We ordered cheeseburgers, fries and drinks, the price was the same as in the other McDonald's restaurants in California. Unfortunately only the drinks could not be refilled because the dining area was separated from the restaurant.

By the way, there is also a historical museum, which is really interesting. It is small but very informative, because it shows a piece of American success story. As you read the many articles on the walls, you will learn about the history of a restaurant that is very present in our lives.

Anyone who is interested in the history of this fast food chain, should definitely watch the movie about it.

Although I rarely eat at McDonald's, it was very special to visit this oldest McDonald's restaurant in Downey.

If you liked my post, I would be very happy about a like.

  • Well, although I'm not at all a fan of the chain and never eat there, but to visit such a really old restaurant, I imagine to be interesting. 🙂
    dearest greetings

    Best regards too,

    • It feels like in the movie The Founder, right in the thick of things. The clothes of the employees, the music everything as in the 50s.
      best regards

  • How cool! I did not know that such an old McDonald's still exists. It looks really cool, like a real journey into the past. Although I rarely eat at McD but there I would treat myself to a burger. 😉

    best regards

    • That's right, it feels like the music and the environment as in the past.
      best regards

  • That's cool, I did not know that such an old McDonald's still exist. Also great idea to display the price trend.

    Many greetings,

  • Hello Sigrid! I'm also like you (?) USA fan! At McDonalds I've been 3 or 4 times in my life, as I do not like the food there, but I liked your post! I like it when you look at what the story is about! Thank you and LG! Sirit

    • In Germany, I rarely go to McD, but in the US very often. There are fantastic fries and the refill system is great. 1 liter of Coke 1 $ and refill there is not with us.
      best regards

  • how great! So the Mc Donalds looks really great and has a sweet charm. I can well imagine that the flair of the food is a completely different than the current mäis 🙂
    glg check

    • There you have a good check!
Thanks to the environment and the music, you feel totally set back in the past.
      best regards

  • Hello my dear
I'm rarely there, but sometimes I like to eat a burger from Mc Donalds. It's amazing that at that time a burger cost only 15 cents?

    Love Linni

    • That's right, 15 cents hard to believe. I think the refill system for drinks is very good. You pay $ 1, whether small or a liter, and can always refill.
      best regards

  • I have to go there! I've seen the movie 'The Founder' twice before and am so impressed with the whole MCD story 🙂 Ser great post love Sigrid 🙂

    best regards

    • I have already seen the movie and find the story very interesting. Such a success story only exists in the USA.
      best regards

  • Sarah Willier

That's cool. I have to remember, because we are thinking of going back to California in September. I love this area. Simply fantastic

  • I love Mc. Donalds! Must admit - in the US tastes better. Great report for a junk food fanatic, like me. LG Marion

    • It tastes much better, the fries are no comparison to ours and the refill system of the drinks is unbeatable.
      best regards

  • I'm not McDonald's fan but I would eat there too. I love places with history. Thanks for the post.

    Lg from Norway

    • Not here in Germany either, but there in California already. We like to get fries there which are very different than ours and drinks, as you can always refill and the for 1 $ the liter.
      best regards

  • Thank you, Sigrid, for taking us with you!

Nevertheless, I really want to go there myself. First, because fast food (= McD, at least in Austria) nolens volens meanwhile belongs to our life / culture. And second - hmm, clears throat - because I'm avowed fan of McD / always was.

Everything modest, then makes McD fun!

    • Here in Germany I am not necessarily a fan of this chain, but in the US already The fries taste much better there and the refill system is unbeatable. 1 liter of Coke for $ 1 and fill as often as you want, that's great.
      best regards

  • Dear Sigrid,
First of thanks for the film tip, that sounds really interesting! The old McDonald's restaurant is definitely worth a visit! I hope that I can plan that with my next USA stay.
    LG Ina

    • The film is really very interesting, shows the success story of this chain. I really wanted to see this place and it was like a little journey into the past.
      best regards

  • Oh wow that's really cool. I've never heard of it. Was definitely a great experience

  • A hamburger for 15 cents? That would be a bargain! I think it's great that this restaurant still exists! 🙂

    Best regards,

  • Dear Sigrid,

I'm not a fan of this chain ... but visiting America at Mc Donalds is just part of it. The oldest Mc Donalds is cool. That would be a must for me to stop by. Many thanks for your photos and impressions.

    Have a nice evening!

  • How cool is that! I did not even know that it existed 😀 hamburgers for 15 cents, how blatant - times are really changing 😀

  • Man Sigrid, at some point I have to emigrate because of you and your blog. How can you show so nice corner 😉 the Mc Donalds is the hammer and would definitely worth a visit. Oh, you beautiful America, every time I read your blog I think about my honeymoon and remember the days in Miami. It was just so nice 🙂

    Many greetings Anja
